Weather Station for Solar system

Weather Station is usually installed at big solar plants usually installed at the industrial and commercial level. The main function of the weather station to give the ambient conditions details to the client or the installer. The information shared by the weather station is as follows:

  • Surrounding temperature
  • Irradiance level
  • Wind speed
  • Wind Direction
  • PV temperature sensing
  • Rain Bucket
  • Humidity Sensing

All this information is needed to evaluate the production of the system. Information from Weather station is actually a reference which will help the installers to compare the data form the plant with the reference data in order to check the performance of the system. If the performance of the system is lower as compared to reference data then the system requires O&M visit.

Generally, the weather stations are very costly. The European companies have priced their weather stations close to 1 million PKR. This is a very hefty amount if we talk about the Pakistani Market. The high price of the weather station is the reason that most of the installers don’t install it in their systems in order to compete in the local market.

Energylive is developing a low cost solution for weather station which will provide all the data which can be given by a high end weather station. This solution will be in the range if 0.2 to 0.5 million PKR depending upon the feature demanded by the client. The product being developed by the Energylive will have a built-in GSM/GPRS modem for wireless data transmission to server. The data is also given through wire on RS485 MODBUS interface for data collection and storage on SCADA. The ACE requires active SIM card with GPRS facility from any telecom operator. The network specific settings can be performed remotely by sending configuration messages to the device.

This low cost solution will help the client to be aware of the solar plant’s performance and will also help him to evaluate about the benefits he is getting form his investment which he has put into installing the solar system. Installers will also have a low cost option which will give all the data that a high end weather station can provide to the client.

Another interesting feature that Energylive developers are putting into the portal of Weather station monitoring is that portal will compare the data from weather station with the actual data of the solar plant as well as with the simulation results of German PV simulation softwares like PVSol, PVsyst etc. This comparison will further verified the data from the PV plant weather the plant is functioning at its best or not.
